Evaluation - Question 4

I did use the technology Bubbl to create this mind map but it didn't want to work when i tried to embed it so I had to take a screen shot instead!

Evaluation -Question 5

I did use a website called Gliffy to present this question but the embedding code did not allow me to change the size of the presentation so it was too big for the blog. So instead I have screenshot the question and used it as an image.

Evaluation - Question 7

Evaluation - Question 7

In the video above, it shows some of the problems that we came across when we produced our Preliminary Task. Most of these issues, we managed to solve and were sorted for our final film.

1 - The first photo shown in the video shows Amy getting up and walking off to the corner. If we had added a tracking shot of her going to the corner and then walking out of the room, then our continuity would have been better. However, in the following shot, the corner she is seen walking into is empty and Amy is not there. In our final film, we tried to make sure all of our shots we continuos, but we still had problems with this even in our final film. We tried to make a list of all the shots we wanted to use and when to use them but as we added better parts in as we went along, the list got confused and we ended up forgetting a few important shots that would make the film completely continuos.
2 - This shot shows how Amy is not in the position that the audience would expect her to be and one of the main examples of our lack in continuity.
3 - This photo is another example of an issue with continuity, In this shot I am about to pull a chair out and sit down, which the audience can't really see anyway as the shot is too high but in the next shot I am suddenly sitting down, this is another way in how we could have improved our final film.
4 - This is the shot which shows me sitting down, even though the audience don't see it happen.
5 - We also found that lighting was sometimes an issue with our Preliminary Task, on one side of the room it was very bright and on the other very dark; which made the final product look like it had been filmed at different times in the day. In our final film, we managed to film the whole of the house scene within the space of about an hour, so the lighting stayed relatively the same, apart from the ending when we closed the curtains and drain the light, to show that the body of the woman had been left there until night time.
6 - Also, from all the shots in the video above, they all use mid shots, so this was a disadvantage as we could have varied the types of shots a bit, we mainly used tracking shots (although quite shaky) and sometimes POV shots.

Evaluation - Question 7

In this video, I have shown photos of what we changed in our final film compared to our Preliminary Task.
1 - The first photo shows a shot that we didn't even use in our Preliminary Task, a high angle shot, we used this to show the victims vulnerability. We tried to vary the shots more and used others such as POV, low angle shots, tracking shots, establishing shots, close up etc.
2 - Also, we tried to change the lighting to set the mood rather than it changing randomly like it did in our Preliminary. Also, the audience can see when the light changes as they witness the killer close the curtains. This was far better than our preliminary as it stayed pretty much the same sort of lighting throughout until the end.
3 - This third photo shows one of the low angle shots we used and also how we drained the light and colour from this short scene. This links to the idea of changing the lighting to represent the mood and atmosphere.
4 - In this shot, we used a tracking shot to see the killer move from the sofa, across the room to the double doors. In our last tracking shot that we used in our preliminary; it was very shaky and quite stiff to move the tripod. But in this shot we used a better tripod so that we could get a much smoother shot and it wasn't as blurry as the preliminary tracking shot.
5 - This is another tracking shot that we used.

Overall, we learnt a lot from the preliminary task, not only from the point of view of filming, but in the editing too. Instead of using iMovie, we used Final Cut Express, which was a much more advanced program and allowed us to make the changes we wanted to certain shots and sounds. I also feel that the preliminary task did not have much planning to it and it was very much improvised. Hence, why the shots were pretty much the same throughout. Whereas our final film had a lot of planning going into it to make sure we got a range of camera shots and the right sounds were used.

Evaluation (Question 5)

How did you attract your target audience?

  • Firstly, to even establish a target audience, we had to carry out some research into specific audience types and target audiences. To do this, we made a target audience research video where we interviewed people of different ages and genders in order to get a ranged and varied amount of answers and opinions towards thriller films and conventions. After theism we took into account the target audience research and tried to incorporate it as much as we could into our thriller film opening without moving away too much from he narrative which we personally liked.
  • From our target audience research, we concluded that our specific target audience which we were going to aim for was teenagers and younger adults (16-21 years old).
  • One of the most common answers that we got from our target audience research was the theme of 'death' and 'murder' in a thriller film. We made this the main theme of our narrative. The main events which the audience see in our thriller film opening is the death of two victims. This attracts our target audience due to them most commonly 'liking' the convention and theme of murder in thriller films and due to us incorporating that into our thriller film narrative, we were able to successfully appeal to them. In addition, by using a red herring in our thriller film opening (for example, the second murderer's outfit and first impressions), we were able to appeal to our target audience even further as the theme of tension and suspense was also what they enjoyed and typically thought of when it came to thriller films.
  • Furthermore, to add to the main theme of murder and death (which is what our target audience wanted), the props we used in our thriller film opening helped connote danger, tension and murder. For example, one of the main props in our film was a gun. The gun makes the audience identify it as a dangerous weapon and something which can lead to death. This attracts our target audience because they wanted the themes of tension and murder and a gun is a prop which heavily promotes these conventions.
  • One of the locations we used was a dark and empty forest. This particular location helped connote a very atmospheric and eerie feel to the opening. Because of this, it attracts to our target audience. Our target audience enjoyed the conventions of tension and suspense and due to us using this particular location, the audience could easily identify the conventions of tension and danger. In addition, we thought that a forest would be a particular tense and scary place to set part of our thriller film, so we used it!
  • Although, the second location we used acted as a sort-of red herring. This was because the audience would identify that a normal house would't be a specific place of tension and danger. But, because the red herring is eradicated later on and the second murderer is truly revealed, the audience then immediately identify with what was really going on and understand the sudden theme of danger and then death.
  • Our first victim was dressed in a white t-shirt and jeans. Because these are ordinary day-to-day clothes, the audience would identify with the victim through their clothing and relate to them. In addition, white typically connotes innocence and this made it easier for the audience to identify her as the victim in the dangerous situation.
  • Furthermore, the second victim was also dressed in normal day-to-say clothing which our target audience could identify and relate to. The flowery top showed her innocence, femininity and purity which made it all the more tense and striking when she was suddenly and immediately murdered. This was also with the first victim - because she was dressed in normal clothes which the target audience could identify with, it wash;t so obvious that they were going to be victims and end up being murdered.

Lesson Update

Over the last few weeks, I have managed to post four out of seven evaluation questions so far. I have managed to write down my answers and ideas for the remaining three but am struggling to decide or even find a technology to use for them, as I have already used a majority of the technologies available. In last weeks lessons, we decided to start having a quick look into titles and how we could incorporate them into our film and make the effective; and try to use them in a way that they would tie into the theme of our film. We are currently still deciding and in the process of agreeing on titles that we can use, but hopefully it shouldn't be too long before the final product is completed!

So far I have used four different technologies for my evaluation questions, these are; Aniomoto, Glogster, Powerpoint and Windows Movie Maker; I used these as I hadn't used them before apart from Glogster and they were different in terms of presenting my work.

In the next week or so, I hope to finish the evaluation completely; I will definitely have finished it by the end of half term, once I have decided on some other forms of technology to use!
