Beginning the Preliminary Task

Today we started the Preliminary Task. We have to film a scene of someone opening a door, walking across a room, sitting down in a chair and exchanging some lines of dialogue with someone else. We have to take into consideration the continuity of the scene. We also have to include some key media techniques such as:

Action Matching
We have to make sure that when an action occurs, we film it from two different angles but baring in mind the continuity of the action. It should look like one smooth movement. For example, we are hoping to have a CU of the door handle being moved and then another shot from the other side of the door where you can see the door opening. Making the shot flow smoothly is a good challenge but being able to 'action match' means it looks more interesting.

Shot Reverse Shot
During the conversation, we need to have a shot of Person A speaking, then a reverse shot where you can see Person B speaking, followed by a third shot which is the same shot of Person A giving their response.

180 Degree Rule
We need to create a 'line of action'. As Person A is walking across the room, there is a clear line from the door to the chair. We need to make sure that whatever we film, we never cross over the line so that it doesn't confuse the audience.
Similarly, during the conversation, we need to make sure we stay on one side of it when filming so that the audience can clearly see where the characters are sitting. If we need to switch sides, we need to have a shot which clearly shows the camera moving to the other side of the line as to not confuse the audience.

Alongside the OCR requirements, Miss Hill has put her own little twist on it - she wants us to include a randomly picked object (a ginger bread man timer!) in our film. How we're going to incorporate it in, however, I have no idea. Hopefully we will be able to use it as a bomb.
