- The narrative during this opening is very complicated and the audience does not really understand what is going on. But this is important because it intrigues the audience and makes them ask a lot of questions, making them want to watch more of the film.
- A common Thriller convention - a flashback - is used in order to contribute more to the narrative. It shows the audience something that has already happened, and helps explain why what is happening in the present is actually happening.
- The woman in this opening acts as a catalyst because she hints to the audience that the man has a 'past' - but does not give away what this past is, and so leaves the audience asking more questions.
- During the opening, the audience is also introduced to the spinning top. This is a really effective enigma code as this becomes important later on in the film.
- There are lots of scenes throughout the opening which are 'jumped between', contributing to the narrative in many different ways.
- The opening makes the audience ask lots of questions...for example, why have they been washed up on the beach?
· Characters speak in a foreign language, which makes the film more
mysterious because to begin with as the audience doesn’t know whom they are
or what they are doing.
· All characters are wearing black – suggests that they are dark
characters.
· The characters are very mysterious; the conversations are limited
and sometimes spoken in another language. When the conversations are
understandable, it’s about things that encourage the audience to ask
questions. They have no idea what they’re talking about.
· The majority of the characters are men and wearing sharp, smart
suits.
· The Chinese man is sitting at the head of the table, which
suggests that he is the boss and is beginning a mission.
· You don’t see any of the man’s face to begin with.
